The author refutes the myth of Cardinal NewmanÆs Liberalism and supports what Newman himself said ôFor thirty, forty, fifty years I have resisted to the best of my powers the spirit of Liberalism in religion.ö St. Pius X came to NewmanÆs defense against those accusing Newman of Liberalism and said ô. . . they should follow Newman the author faithfully by studying his books . . . let them understand his pure and whole principles, his lessons and inspiration. . . .ö Pope Pius XII described him as ôthe pride of Britain and the Universal Church.ö The reason that Newman can be so easily misrepresented is because relatively few Catholics are familiar with his writing. The object of this book is not simply to recount the life of EnglandÆs greatest convert but to provide the reader with sufficient selections of NewmanÆs writing to make it clear that St. Pius X was fully justified in exonerating him from the charge of Modernism.
